How to Prepare for a Successful Trade Show

Getting ready for a trade show is possibly more important than showing up at the expo. As Benjamin Franklin once stated, “If you fail to plan, then you are planning to fail” and this is true in trade show preparation. There are so many things we can do in advance to ensure that we have the best possible outcome at our trade show. For instance, it is good to review with your team a qualifying question to ask attendees.

Keep in mind we don’t exhibit at trade shows to make new friends, we are looking for new customers. For that reason, we don’t want to say, “Hi how are you?” to each person walking by. The problem with that question is that they will keep walking as they answer, “Fine, thank you and how are you?” and that takes a minimum of 3 seconds. Consequently, in 3-seconds they have walked past your booth if you have a 10 foot exhibit space. If you have a 20 foot exhibit space you can try chasing them but they are walking away.

This is why it is good to discuss with your team a qualifying question. For example, as people pass by you might ask, “Does your company use widgets?” and if they say “no” then your response is, “Enjoy the trade show” and let them keep walking. However, if they say “Yes” then you might ask, “Would you like to see why ours last longer or what makes ours more affordable?” and then you have a prospect that you are speaking with.
